  1. I voted for Mormon Doctrine over the Bible because I have the sense that when the two conflict, the average member familiar with both will go with Mormon Doctrine. That is probably a minority of members, but a highly influential minority.

I also voted for CES over Relief Society. If, instead of RS, the alternative had been “women of the church,” I would have voted differently. But I think much of the influence attributed to the Relief Society is independent of the organization itself. The influence of the CES, on the other hand, has haunted me for 30 years.

  2. Having to choose between saving ordinances and the companionship of the Holy Ghost has turned up the absolute absurdity of this Doctrine Madness game.

    I went with companionship.

  3. But even if Mormon Doctrine holds a greater weight in some peoples minds, it doesn’t mean it’s a more influential force overall. 95% of MD is just an outline of already established beliefs. I think the question to ask here is how different would the church be without the given item. From that perspective, I think the answer is pretty obviously the Bible.

For me, it was no choice at all. I’m answering that one against something very specific in Ephesians, but others must be thinking of something else.

Myself, I think the plurality is very interesting.

  5. Johnna,
Just wait until you have to choose between the Book of Mormon or Joseph Smith. I never said it wouldn’t be absurd, I just said that it would be worth it.

  6. LOL David J. It’s actually just a strange way of saying “almost all of it.” I suppose its arguably slightly more or less, I actually haven’t read it since my mission. But it just seems that I remember very little that is independent of the teachings of other leaders.
